The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter. - Winston Churchill
Gentlemen, if you are all done enthusiastically agreeing with each other, in the immortal words of Jules Winfield, allow me to retort….
first, Britain - yes indeed there was an undeniable, uncomfortable, undercurrent of racism involved in their referendum - because the British are, and always have been RACISTS
this is not news
to anyone (who isn’t white) who has visited the British Isles (and this includes Scotland and, to a lesser extent, Ireland and Wales) this is immediately and undeniably and uncomfortably apparent
they are so racist they even have a weird form of it I’d never encountered before, where they look down their noses at so-called “Colonials” - Aussies, Kiwis, and South Africans primarily
they are so racist this is a facet of their culture that has even infected those colonies (looking at you, Australia) who sometimes have taken this even further than Mother England has (looking at you South Africa)
they are so racist it actually came as a genuine shock and surprise to Hitler when they decided to NOT join his crusade to unify Europe, under white people
so let’s put that aside, if we can - and yes I note thus far the entirety of the online world has proven incapable of doing so - and look at WHY the British PM decided this was a question that needed answering. in the first place - this is, after all, not something that just magically popped into his head, from out of nowhere…
so, still on Britain, they never joined Schengen - this was part of the EU model they never wanted any part of, from the very beginning (no doubt for reasons already explored)
(I assume we all know what Schengen is)
they also never adopted the Euro
this is important because, apart from yet another rejection of the EU, at the time all the smart money (pardon the pun) was on London becoming an economic backwater, because of this decision - much like all the speculation is, today - and that this was a HUGE mistake when, in fact, London has instead proven to have remained an economic powerhouse and is doing quite well for itself, thanks
do you see where I’m going with this?
they already had a foot out the door and, let’s be honest, everybody knew this was going to happen
sure, we hoped against hope that maybe the death of Jo Cox might finally have turned the tide against the “Leave” campaign but we, all of us, if we’re truly honest with ourselves, if only within the tiniest kernel within our heart-of-hearts, knew this was coming
it was always coming
they wanted to leave long before 2016
they never even joined properly, in the first place
the entire time they’ve been there, all they have done is bicker with the European Parliament - mostly about money - and have always wanted “special” status
you guys were recently complaining about Short Memories - just look back at the relationship they’ve had the with EU, just in the last couple of years…
better yet, go back to before the formation of the EU itself, back to the prototype model - the Beta - the Version 1.0 - the EEC…
look at the kind of relationship they had with them
Google the words “Margaret Thatcher” and “Europe” - read her Bruges speech, or go even further back to 1975…
how is ANYONE with ANY sense of history, with any kind of a memory, actually surprised??
so the EU itself:
first of all, speaking of Short Memories, does anyone remember Grexit?
been to Greece, lately?
the EU is not in good shape - the British want out, the Russians want out, the Greeks want (but cannot have) out, the Spanish aren’t doing so well, the Danes want out, the Polish aren’t too happy…
many consider the EU a “failed experiment” - for various reasons, primarily because… come on, let’s face it, THEY’RE EUROPEAN! if there was a way to disagree on how often the sun rises and sets, they’d find it
having said that, everyone agrees there should be some kind of Single Market super trading block and there is only a tiny minority who think the Open Borders idea was a mistake
so the takeaway I’ve been hearing - among the serious non-partonising-joke discussions about all this - is that Britain will be the first, but many will soon follow and the EU will dissolve - but will likely be replaced by some kind of Version 3.0
OK so I think I’ve ranted enough but there was just one more thing: Scotland is up in the air, but if you think (Northern) Ireland is going to be allowed to leave the UK, you’re dreaming - to be fair, McCool understands there will be a proper border and we will see a return to the 1970’s, but I was a little unclear where he thought that border would lie?
Peace
The Colonel
